If you want to get to the soul of a destination, look at what and how they drink – from Kult at Hotel Le Saint a Paris, to the Jetty at Essque Zalu. Here are ten of our favourite boutique hotels, each with cool bars that guarantee a cocktail made to perfection.
Hotel Le Saint a Paris – Paris, France
The intimate, secluded Kult Bar at this Left Bank gem is just the place for a ‘1789’ – a white wine, whiskey and lillet cocktail invented to commemorate the French Revolution. Best of all, it lies within walking distance of the Louvre and several other iconic Paris sights – perfect for afternoon wanderings.
Lime Wood, Lyndhurst, Hampshire
Celebrate the arrival of another English Spring with a Pimm’s cup at the bar of this stunner of a boutique hotel, just outside of Lyndhurst in Hampshire. Head for the bar to kick off the perfect weekender as it starts to warm up in the New Forest.
Dormy House, Near Broadway, Worcestershire
Dormy House has the style and sophistication you’d expect from a Cotswolds country house and that extends to the Potting Shed Bar – key words at Dormy House being indulgence and luxury. If you’re going to take full advantage of this, one of the best of British boutique hotels, recline with a Tom Collins in the luxe lounge of the bar.
Essque Zalu – Nungwi, Zanzibar
The ‘Zanzibar’ first appeared in the thirties, and we understand the name – this spin on a vermouth sour, with a hint of gin, is perfect for sipping by the pool under warm Zanzibar skies. The best place to sip one of these in style is Essque Zalu, a luxury hotel that exudes a breezy, barefoot chic atmosphere. We bet you’ll keep coming back to the Baobab, Jetty and Pool bars – they’re all beauties
D-Resort Gocek – Muğla, Turkey
Raki, a distilled anise-flavoured spirit made from grapes, is the national drink of Turkey. It is perfect for sipping (slowly) over a plate of mezze, at this sun-drenched luxury hotel in the country’s south-west. We particularly recommend the views from the Olive Tree bar & restaurant over the gardens and out to sea – perfection!
Luna2 – Seminyak, Bali
Luna2 Hotel in Bali, by Seminyak Beach, is a private hotel for you and ten of your friends or family. It boasts two bars – the cool Pop! Bar indoors and the Space Bar on the rooftop – in addition to a host of mod cons like a cinema. While you’re kicking back in Bali, try an arak and lemonade, a concoction made with the (potent) local palm liquor.
Bloom B&B – Venice, Italy
This romantic bolthole b&b is the perfect place to snuggle up after a day discovering the secrets of ‘La Serenissima’. Spectacular views across to St Mark’s Square and other iconic Venetian landmarks is a major draw here, but we love the well-stocked bar with expert staff too. If you’re wondering what everybody else there is drinking, try a ‘Spritz’ – a mix of campari and soda habitually drunk by the Venetians.
L’Hotel – Paris, France
Oscar Wilde used to frequent the bar of this Parisian treasure. Marlon Brando loved it too. It’s still a place to sit and spot celebrity artists and actors, who keep coming back for the opulent interiors, intimate atmosphere and stellar service. If you want to absorb the belle epoque vibe of the place, ask the bar for a shot of absinthe – the ‘green fairy’ that fanned the creative talents of Toulouse-Lautrec and other significant members of the Parisian art collective.
Borgo Pignano – Volterra, Italy
Now here’s a bar with a difference. On evenings at Borgo Pignano in the Tuscan hills near Volterra, the bartender brings his trolley on the lawn. There he’ll make you whatever you desire, as you admire the gorgeous views. That’s pretty much the way all things are at this at this wonderful luxury retreat – dining, activities, room preferences – they’ll go above and beyond to meet your wishes. While you’re there, order us a Negroni – gin, vermouth and a big slosh of the Campari.
Casa Marques – Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
The ‘Capirinha’, Brazil’s national drink is light, bright and a little tart. In many ways, it’s quite like this funky, modern boutique hotel in the middle of Rio’s hip Santa Teresa neighbourhood.
